1986 Mexican "World Cup of Soccer" Gold Coin Proof Set - keep or sell?
1 Attachment(s)
I bought these today at 90% spot, my biz partner passed so I don't have to share them. Trying to decide if I should just set these back (though I would rather have only .999 stuff), or if they can fetch a premium anywhere (and where I could safely sell them other than eBay).
They are .900 fine, two of the coins are 250 peso, two are 500 peso. The 250 pesos are 8.64g each, the 500 pesos are 17.28g each, for a total .999 content of 1.5ozt. According to a letter included in the packaging that the owner showed me, there are only 63,000 proof sets made. Not sure if that's sales hype or what, but it made me very reluctant to scrap these out. What do you think? |

Intesting.
I'd KEEP them - but MEXICO (Baja) is less than 100 miles away........ And I always go there ............. |

I say keep them but I understand how you might be inclined to just send them to the refiner. The twice monthly coin show I go to has a dealer who buys all beautiful stuff people bring in to sell. He scraps everything, even beautiful Silverware. I bought a set of Currier and Ives 3 ounce Silver bars from him recently that are really nice. Saved them from being melted.

Too bad you don't E-Bay, I buy that type of coin a lot. I'd say keep them.:tongue_ma:

Thanks for the responses.
I've checked with a couple of local shops and zero interest. I don't really want to hold them either, because I think GAEs, Krands, and 1oz bars are gonna be way more liquid than odd stuff like this. I can scrap these at 98% spot, but that seems like a waste. latemetal, What would a fair price be on the set, assuming spot is $1000? |
Re: 1986 Mexican "World Cup of Soccer" Gold Coin Proof Set - keep or sell?
Assuming you would use fleabay, $1600-1650 with free or cheap shipping. That way someone using cashback would pay $1472-1518+s/h/i. I would use buy-it-now feature with best offer.
One thing though I've bought a lot on that site, I've never sold.:15_1_70v: |
Re: 1986 Mexican "World Cup of Soccer" Gold Coin Proof Set - keep or sell?
Thanks for the info.
Considering eBay's crazy fees, and the PayPal fee, I would come out almost the same scrapping them out at 98% spot. :( If anyone is interested in them at spot + $100 through Escrow.com, that will include shipping and I'll pay the escrow fees. |

Well, I'd keep them, and thanks for showing us what the set looks like.:applause_

They look like fodder for the melt bin. Nice sets with the original packaging are cool, but with lame designs I'd kill 'em if it's profitable.
